In a little known law that allows adults to drink in the water along Mission Bay, a group of an estimated 1,000 people or so gathered recently to party, San Diego style. When laws were passed in the last several years to remove drinking from the beach, business dropped at many hotels and restaurants along the beaches of San Diego such as Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, and Pacific Beach.
Additional concessions such as bonfire pits have been removed from some beaches, and the beaches of San Diego are losing their party luster. Can family-friendly policies sustain the once party beaches? Merchants say they are hanging in there.
